The Laughing Buddha

US$229.00

A rare opportunity to purchase a Laughing Buddha pendant carved from deep lavender and pale green jadeite. The Laughing Buddha or Mílèfó is unique to Chinese and Japanese Buddhism. Also known as The Maitreya Buddha he is always depicted as a happy, fat, balding man with his belly exposed. I initially bought this piece of jade with the intention of using the lavender in it to fashion a cabochon for a ring but at the last moment decided the lavender in the stone was just right for the belly of a Laughing Buddha. It is tradition to rub the belly for luck. He represents wealth, happiness in life and fertility. Sold with a gold washed silver bezel.

Height: 25mm. Width: 25mm. Depth: 11mm, Weight: 12g
