An excellent carving of Guānyīn the Goddess of Mercy using the different colours of this gem quality piece of jadeite to best effect.  Guānyīn originated in Buddhist India as a male god. His name, when translated into Chinese, means ‘he who listens to the woes of the world’. On reaching China he underwent a sex change and become the goddess of mercy. She is not only part of the Buddhist pantheon. She has also been adopted by Daoism and other Eastern religions
