Using the Rind
Most jade that is found in or around a river usually has some sort of rind or skin. This rind or skin on nephrite jade is formed through natural processes such as weathering, mineral deposition, oxidation, and environmental exposure, which creates a unique surface appearance. It is common for craftsmen in China to incorporate this rind into the pendants they carve. One of the simplest and best examples of this is when the entire pebble is covered with a uniform crust. When this occurs , carvers take a delight in using this rind to create things of beauty. This short film is a great example of how it’s done. Learn more at www.jadefiend.com
