It is taken from the chapter which tells the story of how eight Western powers invaded China, occupied Beijing and spent months murdering and raping the inhabitants while they plundered its treasures. The chapter recounts how the soldiers from the USA seemed to have behaved far better than everyone else. The same cannot be said for the diplomats and missionaries who stole whatever they could lay their hands on.
